What I’m Watching: Last Resort

Last Resort: Season 1, Episode 6 “Another Fine Navy Day” (B)

I have mixed feelings about this episode. On one level, it’s the strongest episode since the pilot, digging deep into each of the characters’ most emotional memories as they struggle to hold on to their sanity and their consciousness. I was less thrilled about the red coloring of the word “chemical” in the “3 hours after the chemical attack” title card that opened the episode, since I think that the effects of the poisoned water supply were dramatic enough to stand on their own without a jumbled chronology to confuse events and only gradually reveal the truth of things. The most moving part of the episode was watching Marcus hallucinate his son as he walked among the passed out crew members and tried to ensure that everyone could wake up again. Scenes such as that and Tani thinking she saw her mother gave this episode a ghostly feel which worked mostly to its advantage. Sam’s hallucination was considerably stronger, and it was interesting to discover that his declaration of endless love for his wife actually happened, only Sohpie rather than his wife. Serrat’s role in the whole situation was intriguing, and I wonder how his complicity in the chemical attack will affect his relationship going forward with Marcus and the crew of the Colorado. Focusing only on the chemical attack on the island left out the development of the rest of the action, namely the aftermath of the deadly shooting involving Curry and Kylie’s continued quest for the truth. Answers are good, and this episode only provided more questions.
