What I’m Watching: Sons of Anarchy

Sons of Anarchy: Season 5, Episode 8 “Ablation” (B+)

Jax is getting closer to the truth about the extent of Clay’s actions than he ever has before, and it won’t be long before every member of the club agrees that Clay deserves to die. Lying about Gemma being run off the road by the same guys who targeted Jax and Chibs indicated his protective instinct for just one person in the world, and that’s Gemma. Threatening Nero won’t do him much good since, unlike Clay, he’s actually a good person. Telling Juice about what he’s done after unearthing Juice’s confession about his conversations with Roosevelt is likely to come back to haunt him, but it puts Juice in a very precarious position, one which Roosevelt may reveal before Clay has the chance. Tara’s fury at Gemma for driving her children while she was high is understandable, but she clearly hates Clay enough more if she was willing to sponsor Jax’s plan to have Gemma get close to Clay. I like that Jax is being fully honest with Tara now, and it’s astonishing to see how far she’s come since the start of the show. Jax found a good outlet for the rage that’s been building up inside of him by chopping off his assailant’s hands, which prompted an amusing response from Unser about just sending fingerprints on a glass the next time and an appropriately serious one from Pope. Frankie taking Nero and Lila hostage was extreme, and it’s a good thing that he decided to spare Chibs’ life since that’s one more loss that would really have killed Jax.
