Emmy Predictions: Best Drama Series

The 64th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, July 19th. Please refer to my Emmy musings for this category for a detailed analysis of the contenders, and, as always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.

Last year’s nominees: Boardwalk Empire, Dexter, Friday Night Lights, Game of Thrones, The Good Wife, Mad Men

The competition: There’s a simple math problem this year. One of last year’s nominees, “Friday Night Lights,” is ineligible because it’s over, and one of the previous year’s nominees, Breaking Bad, is back, so that slot is taken. It’s fair to assume that, after what most consider to be a subpar season, Dexter is out. Homeland is the hottest new show, so that’s in, but what about Downton Abbey, which made a killing with eleven nominations and six wins last year in the miniseries category? Mad Men is safe, and Game of Thrones probably is too. The question then becomes, does Boardwalk Empire or The Good Wife get tossed out, since both continue to be excellent in their second and third seasons, respectively? It’s a very tough call, but it seems impossible that “Downtown Abbey” won’t get in, which means that “The Good Wife” may pay the price. Nipping at the heels of those eight shows is Justified, which so deserves a mention, and a trio of newbies, Boss, Luck, and Suits, that all likely won’t have much luck this year with Emmy voters.

The predicted nominees: Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, Homeland, Mad Men

The predicted winner: Homeland

Next up: Best Comedy Series

Maybe all seven will get in. It's happened before (remember 2009?)...

You know - I was thinking the same thing, and thinking of 2009. But I'm also not entirely sure that "Dexter" is definitely going to be snubbed, which complicates things further. Excited for Thursday!
