The 64th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, July 19th. Please refer to my Emmy musings for this category for a detailed analysis of the contenders, and, as always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.
Last year’s nominees: Elizabeth Banks (30 Rock), Kristen Chenoweth (Glee), Tina Fey (Saturday Night Live), Dot-Marie Jones (Glee), Cloris Leachman (Raising Hope), Gwyneth Paltrow (Saturday Night Live)
The competition: Don’t expect to see the same names as last year – Fey’s three-year streak is over, Leachman is in the supporting category, and only Elizabeth Banks (30 Rock) and Dot-Marie Jones (Glee) are eligible. Those two could make it in again due to decent episodic showcases this year, but they’ll likely make way for new blood. Susan Sarandon (The Big C), Mary Steenburgen (30 Rock), and Patricia Clarkson (Parks and Recreation) are three veteran actresses with a great shot at making the cut, and they’ll probably be joined by Melissa McCarthy (Saturday Night Live), a winner for Best Comedy Actress last year likely to be snubbed this year, and Ellen Barkin (Modern Family). Other possibilities include Kathy Bates (Two and a Half Men), four-time nominee Elaine Stritch (30 Rock), snubbed for the first time last year, Maya Rudolph (Saturday Night Live), and young “Mad Men” star Kiernan Shipka (Apartment 23) for her amusing self-portrayal. For the sixth slot, however, I’m predicting Kathryn Hahn (Parks and Recreation), who made the campaign plotline on NBC’s government comedy this season so much more enjoyable.
The predicted nominees: Ellen Barkin, Patricia Clarkson, Kathryn Hahn, Melissa McCarthy, Susan Sarandon, Mary Steenburgen
The predicted winner: Steenburgen
