Emmy Predictions: Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series

The 64th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, July 19th. Please refer to my Emmy musings for this category for a detailed analysis of the contenders, and, as always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.

Last year’s nominees: Steve Buscemi, Kyle Chandler, Matthew Fox, Michael C. Hall, Jon Hamm, Hugh Laurie, Timothy Olyphant

The competition: This race has plenty of wild cards in it this year, since last year’s winner Kyle Chandler is out of the running and defending three-year champ Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), whose show took a hiatus last year, is back. There’s new blood like Damian Lewis (Homeland) contending, as well as two veteran actors on new shows, Kelsey Grammer (Boss) and Dustin Hoffman (Luck), who may still command respect despite the quick cancellation of his show. This may be the year that Michael C. Hall (Dexter) and Hugh Laurie (House) miss out on nominations, but it is Laurie’s last shot, so he might get recognized. Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire) and Jon Hamm (Mad Men) are sure things, while Timothy Olyphant (Justified) will have to prove that his nomination last year wasn’t a fluke. Two actors on USA’s hot new show “Suits,” Patrick J. Adams and Gabriel Macht, may shake up the race, as could Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey) now that his show is contending in the drama category. It’s also possible that perennial “24” nominee Kiefer Sutherland could make a showing for his new series “Touch.”

The predicted nominees: Buscemi, Cranston, Grammer, Hamm, Lewis, Olyphant

The predicted winner: Cranston
