Emmy Predictions: Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series

The 64th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, July 19th. Please refer to my Emmy musings for this category for a detailed analysis of the contenders, and, as always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.

Last year’s nominees: Kathy Bates, Connie Britton, Mireille Enos, Mariska Hargitay, Julianna Marguiles, Elisabeth Moss

The competition: Only one of last year’s nominees is officially ineligible, and that’s Britton. It’s unlikely, but still possible, that Mireille Enos (The Killing) and Kathy BatesMariska Hargitay (Law and Order: SVU) always seems to get in, so count her in, and it’s unwise to bet against Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife) and Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men), both of whom had stellar seasons. Sure to join the list is Golden Globe winner Claire Danes (Homeland), and former nominee Glenn Close (Damages), whose show returns after a one-year hiatus, is a good bet as well. Past winner Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer) could return after being snubbed last year, though she’ll also be eligible next year for the show’s final season, which begins next week. Watch out for Elizabeth McGovern (Downton Abbey), who was nominated in the miniseries category last year, and for never-nominated Katey Sagal (Sons of Anarchy). It’s possible that Kerry Washington (Scandal) will break in since she’s announcing Emmy nominations, but I think that the final slot will go to an actress who performed exceptionally in a role no one expected much from: Jessica ParĂ© (Mad Men).

The predicted nominees: Close, Danes, Hargitay, Marguiles, Moss, Paré

The predicted winner: Danes
