Emmy Predictions: Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series

The 64th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, July 19th. Please refer to my Emmy musings for this category for a detailed analysis of the contenders, and, as always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.

Last year’s nominees: Andre Braugher, Josh Charles, Alan Cumming, Peter Dinklage, Walton Goggins, John Slattery

The competition: Last year’s winner Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) is a sure thing to return, and perennial nominee John Slattery (Mad Men) is a good bet as well. Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), who won two years ago, is almost guaranteed to return after his show took a year off, and his costar Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad) will also be nominated if there’s any justice in this world. A few other actors had extremely strong seasons and could break through - Neal McDonough (Justified), John Goodman (Damages), and Jared Harris (Mad Men). Mandy Patinkin (Homeland), who has three career nominations and one win, is likely to break into the race, but he’ll have to oust three of last year’s first-time nominees: Alan Cumming (The Good Wife), Josh Charles (The Good Wife), and Walton Goggins (Justified). Though his show only aired six episodes during this eligibility period, two-time nominee Andre Braugher (Men of a Certain Age) is in fact a threat to return.

The predicted nominees: Peter Dinklage, Giancarlo Esposito, Neal McDonough, Mandy Patinkin, Aaron Paul, John Slattery

The predicted winner: Esposito
