Emmy Predictions: Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series

The 64th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, July 19th. Please refer to my Emmy musings for this category for a detailed analysis of the contenders, and, as always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.

Last year’s nominees: Christine Baranski, Michelle Forbes, Christina Hendricks, Kelly Macdonald, Margo Martindale, Archie Panjabi

The competition: There’s one major new contender who is going to shake up this race this year, and that’s Maggie Smith (Downton Abbey), who won this award in the miniseries category last year. She’ll replace Martindale, who wasn’t on her show this year. Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife), Christina Hendricks (Mad Men), Christine Baranski (The Good Wife), and Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire) are all good bets to return, while Michelle Forbes (The Killing) probably won’t make the cut due to a diminished role on the bleak drama. Past nominees January Jones (Mad Men), who was nominated in the lead race two years ago, and Rose Byrne (Damages), who was nominated two years in a row when last she was eligible, may return again. New nominees could include Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad), powerhouse Angelica Huston (Smash), Morena Baccarin (Homeland), and Lena Headey (Game of Thrones).

The predicted nominees: Christine Baranski, Christina Hendricks, January Jones, Kelly Macdonald, Archie Panjabi, Maggie Smith

The predicted winner: Smith
