Emmy Predictions: Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series

The 64th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, July 19th. Please refer to my Emmy musings for this category for a detailed analysis of the contenders, and, as always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.

Last year’s nominees: Julie Bowen, Jane Krakowski, Jane Lynch, Sofia Vergara, Betty White, Kristen Wiig

The competition: All six of these ladies are eligible this year, which makes for a crowded race mainly due to the insurgence of two veteran actresses. Cloris Leachman (Raising Hope) is now eligible in this category after a guest acting nomination, and giving that she’s amassed over twenty nominations in her forty-year career, she’s a good bet. The late Kathryn Joosten (Desperate Housewives) won a guest acting award in 2005 and 2008, and she’ll probably be nominated this year as a tribute to her prolific career. Julie Bowen (Modern Family) and Sofia Vergara (Modern Family) are sure things to return, and Betty White (Hot in Cleveland) and Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live) are probable too, especially since it’s the last season for the latter. Don’t count out past winner Jane Lynch (Glee) and three-time nominee Jane Krakowski (30 Rock). It’s a tough year to break in, as Cheryl Hines (Suburgatory), Anna Chlumsky (Veep), Kristen Bell (House of Lies), and Maya Rudolph (Up All Night) will likely find out.

The predicted nominees: Julie Bowen, Kathryn Joosten, Cloris Leachman, Sofia Vergara, Betty White, Kristen Wiig

The predicted winner: Kathryn Joosten
