What I’m Watching: True Blood

True Blood: Season 5, Episode 5 “Let’s Boot and Rally” (B+)

There was a lot of foreboding searching in this episode, with some strong editing to tie it all together and make the hour feel very lost and hopeless. Sookie vomiting at Alcide’s feet negated what apparently he’d been anticipating for a long time, and presented the opportunity for a bit of comedy from former lovers Bill and Eric. Sookie’s obnoxiousness become productive as she led the charge and refused to stay behind in the search for Russell because, as she defiantly told Bill, she’s the one protecting them rather than the other way around. Russell daring Eric to take him on is not a good sign, and the presence of wolves in his creepy lair isn’t good either. Terry and Patrick’s hunt for the truth became even more disturbing as the fire is revealed to be an Iraqi curse, and the fact that Patrick doesn’t believe means that Terry is going to have a hard time convincing him, something he’ll hopefully be able to do before Patrick falls prey to the curse. Sam and Luna getting shot adds a whole new layer of hate to the show with this anti-shifter crowd, and half of Bon Temps’ residents aren’t even there to defend it. Andy and Jason did a respectable job investigating this particular crime, but clearly Jason is hung up on the cause of his parents’ death. Tara and Jessica bonding over being vampires was the most unexpected and wonderful part of the episode, and it’s a shame that Tara had to go ahead and alienate the one friend she has by sleeping with Hoyt.
