What I’m Watching: New Girl

New Girl: Season 6, Episode 17 “Rumspringa” (B)

I go back and forth over the course of just one episode with how I feel about this show. It’s so obnoxiously formulaic in so many ways, with Jess having a breakdown and then Nick getting them locked in a cellar right before they both started their big days. But there are great moments in between too, and the poor plotlines are partially redeemed by endearing character turns that ultimately come out of them. Jess spinning out of control didn’t offer anything of interest, and her teacher-related storylines recently haven’t been top-notch. The same goes for Schmidt, but fortunately the rest of the supporting cast was on hand to provide the right kind of comedy. I love that Nick asked multiple times if certain things he was thinking of buying would be found in a teenager’s room since he was so intent on zeroing in on that insult from Reagan and proving to her and to himself that he wasn’t a child. I had forgotten all about Rhonda, and this chance to see the usually glum “Walking Dead” actress Sonequa Martin-Green going nuts with the pranks was fun. She’s a ridiculous person, but Aly’s participation in the whole thing was well worth it, as was her spontaneous decision to pull a prank of her own on the infamous Rhonda. I’m not sure about this whole Liberian-adoption thing, but I’m happy to forget all about that too. I’m just happy that Aly is sticking and that she’s been giving great material, and I look forward to seeing much of more since she’s always a strong addition to the show.
