Ozark: Season 4, Episode 9 “Pick a God and Pray” (B+)
I’m not sure why I thought that maybe Javi somehow wasn’t dead, but that’s never been the nature of this show. People don’t come back to life, but instead they switch sides on a regular basis and follow the best route to success or money, regardless of whatever they’ve done in the past. Opening with Wendy and Marty talking about what happened showed how much they’re still in the same place, with Wendy ready to do whatever it takes to put them ahead and, as she put it, Marty always looking out for everyone else ahead of his family. They’re facing many problems at the moment, namely the dissolution of their deal with the FBI. But Wendy managed to make that one work too, walking out of a meeting with Navarro where he promised to find her and kill her and manipulating events so that he would be compelled to take the deal again. Marty didn’t hesitate when he learned what happened, showing that he knows when to let her take the lead, especially since it very much worked here. Marty going to Mexico under the pretense that Navarro is the one who killed Javi is an interesting and certainly precarious plan, but the bigger issue is that Claire made the surprising move to come to Ruth to be her supplier, something that will surely lead to vengeful action on Wendy’s part. The most threatening partnership is the one that has formed between Mel and Maya, who both know way too much and who together have a sincere understanding of the Byrde family’s role in all of this.
