What I’m Watching: This Is Us

This Is Us: Season 6, Episode 15 “Miguel” (B+)

It feels very appropriate to have an episode devoted to Miguel as this show is about to sign off for good since he’s almost been a strong part of the story but never gotten his due as an important and enduring member of the Pearson family. Starting with his own childhood and the way that he was taught to see the world by his parents and the people in their greater orbit was very informative, but the most compelling part was when Jack tried to set him up with Rebecca so that they could start getting along. She gave him a very hard time about always saying people’s names over and over, and we’ve seen enough of the rest of the story to understand what happened to get to that time when he showed back up and she just went over and kissed him. That was an unfortunate setup for the two of them to break the news of their relationship to her adult children, who reacted very poorly, particularly Kevin, and it was very sweet to see years later how the three of them united to tell him that he had honored his vows and that they loved him. Seeing how he wanted to be the one to care for Rebecca felt very real given the way that many people act as caregivers for their spouses, and I liked that we got to see Kevin of all people reaching out to get Miguel’s son to give him another chance because of how he’s managed to endear himself to the family after an initially rocky start.
