Snowpiercer: Season 3, Episode 1 “The Tortoise and the Hare” (B)
It’s refreshing to see this show headed in a new direction, with two distinctly separate trains operating and discord going on in both settings. It’s difficult to recognize things aboard Snowpiercer, where first class has been shuttered and is cold enough that Ruth is able to hide there since no one would ever look for her given the unlivable temperatures. Yet Wilford remains committed to reopening it so that he can continue the class system upon his successful reacquisition of his engine, and he’s keeping close watch on Zara’s pregnancy as a very literal way of preserving the future. It’s so interesting to see how Ruth is always in service of someone who isn’t there, first waiting for Wilford to return and now faithfully working on behalf of Layton in his absence. The punishments Wilford is doling out for those who took advantage of the baths they got as rewards for being part of the resistance were predictably harsh and unforgiving, representing a brutality that is all too effective in a totalitarian society. Things aboard Layton’s runaway train are far calmer, with Miss Audrey being treated quite well, enough so that she could easily escape her confines and rush to the front of the train to force Alex to get back on track. While he was out saving Ben, Layton made a new friend, and while I expected it to be Melanie since Jennifer Connelly still appears in art for the show, it looks like it’s someone else who might have enlightening information about how to stay alive in this permanent winter.
