What I’m Watching: How I Met Your Father (Season Finale)

How I Met Your Father: Season 1, Episode 10 “Timing is Everything” (B+)

This was a pretty impactful finale, and it was good to know ahead of time that this isn’t the last we’ll see of this show. Seeing the Captain felt just as irrelevant as before, but the fact that his scorned wife was ready to sink all of his boats was the crucial catalyst for the unexpected return of someone who hasn’t been present since the pilot at the very end of the episode. The romance between Jesse and Sophie was passionate but short-lived, and the fact that Jesse blurted out that he loved her in his sleep made her try to recoil in a way that unfortunately led to him getting back together with Meredith very quickly. It’s possible that kiss didn’t mean as much as she thought it did, but it’s going to be hard for him to walk that back. Ian’s return is definitely a surprise, though I’m sure if I was a loyal viewer of the original, I would have expected such callbacks based on a few clues peppered throughout the season (if they existed). Cobie Smulders showing up as Robin was also a shock, though it didn’t feel too intrusive, especially since she was all about the sage advice for Sophie about not making the same mistakes she had. While it would be nice to see Ellen explore a relationship with someone – namely Rachel, despite her repeated missteps – getting a job with someone who thinks she’s funny after he thinks about her jokes for a while is a good start. Sid and Hannah overcame their major obstacles to find happiness and tether themselves together in an official way, while Valentina and Charlie appear to have broken up, something that likely won’t be permanent but will surely make things awkward in the near future, especially considering the fact that Jesse and Sophie will also have to navigate discomfort. I’ve enjoyed this show and look forward to season two and beyond!

Season grade: B+
Season MVP: Hilary Duff
