What I’m Watching: Severance

Severance: Season 1, Episode 5 “The Grim Barbarity of Optics and Design” (B+)

So much for Helly’s escape plan, which involved Graner racing to get there ahead of Mark and then rushing him into the elevator. It’s crazy to think how instantly that panic could return for both of them, with Mark scared when the elevator doors opened and he saw Harmony and Milchick and Helly tortured by having to wake up on the ground in the elevator. Having Ms. Casey carefully watch Helly and monitor her mental state was hardly a productive solution, and it was nice of Mark to try to give her a reprieve by taking her on that very weird walk to find the goats. Throughout all this, we got to see Mark show up very late at the birthing retreat where Rickon clued him in to the fact that the book he gave him got stolen – apparently by a thief who would be so inspired by what he read that he would return it – and Devon trying to make friends with the expectant mother in the fancy room next door. On the note of creepy occurrences, Irving seeing black liquid dripping from the ceiling was eerie, as was the art that came out of the printer, all part of a test Milchick was running, apparently without authorization from Harmony, even though she trusted his instincts. The severity with which Dylan reacted to Burt’s presence was jarring, but he was eventually okay being led into a room filled with many people by him, ending this episode on a very intriguing and mysterious note.
