What I’m Watching: Mr. Mayor (Season Premiere)

Mr. Mayor: Season 2, Episode 1 “Move Fast and Break Things” (B+)

I do find this show to be a bit unnecessarily wacky at times, but it also tends to make me laugh more than almost anything else I’m currently watching. The unexpected motivator for that moment in this episode was when Jayden responded to Neil asking if he had seen his daughter “Yes, she’s beautiful, sir!” and I also appreciated his earlier display of his “mouth vacuum” after repeatedly failing the welcome video. It was sweet to see Mikaela and Tommy rally to try to help Jayden keep his job after he was actively doing just about everything he could to get cut. Answering that everyone used only eight miles of floss was also a hilariously absurd reply. Arpi’s ability to travel through the vents is exactly the kind of ridiculous concept that defined “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and Lillian’s entire existence, and I like how we’re now getting into the rivalry between Neil and Arpi that started with Orly’s driver’s test. Arpi figuring out a way to get around the system and help Orly get her license right away was clever, but Neil was able to exact the perfect revenge and do it in a way that allowed him to mock her for having egg on her face after earlier alleging that she was more rigid than Republicans, one of the biggest insults he could lob at her. I’m not sure how things will be with the consultants around, but I like that it has everyone on edge in a very different way.
