What I’m Watching: This Is Us

This Is Us: Season 6, Episode 7 “Taboo” (B+)

This show really does a spectacular job of editing together its many time periods, giving us pieces of the relationships that help to make a productive whole, even if we don’t get to see all of it. Rebecca was the real star of this episode, struggling to ignore her mother when she was hosting Thanksgiving for the first time, bringing a date to Thanksgiving with her family, and then confronting her mortality with her adult children and grandchildren. It was sweet to see Jack trying to look out for her and then having him be the one who got in trouble when he told Rebecca that her parents were moving to Connecticut, which made her change her perspective entirely. Marguerite and Matt were not great dates, and it was interesting to see that Miguel then moved to Texas and that was not the start of their marriage. Kate’s hostility to Randall looking at her because she gained weight was intense, and she loaded her plate defiantly the same way that Rebecca did in front of her mother. In the present, Kevin and Randall were driving everyone crazy with their guitar and phone, respectively, and fortunately it all led to an emotional but generally well-received family meeting where Rebecca smartly communicated her wishes. Sharing the secret ingredient with Kate was a nice moment, one she could really use after Toby’s hostile behavior that reminded Kate all too much of her own childhood. Kevin’s response to Miguel was unkind, and I think that having guest rooms at any place is always a good idea, especially since families may end up growing over the years.
