What I’m Watching: Ghosts

Ghosts: Season 1, Episode 6 “Pete’s Wife” (B+)

This is a scenario we haven’t encountered yet, but opening with Pete being alive and then having the arrow hit him while he was teaching a group of young scouts indicated that we might finally get to see into the pasts and the lives of all of these characters. I’d be thrilled if that was the standard going forward, though evidently it might be a bit different for the ghosts who lived hundreds and thousands of years ago. And I guess we technically did Thor already, even if that one didn’t really feature any other characters. But Pete the nicest guy in the world was quite horrified when he learned that his wife wasn’t just married to his best friend but had been having an affair with him while Pete was still alive. Fortunately, there was ample opportunity for everyone to get some closure, and the sweet arrival of Pete’s grandson, also named Pete and dressed just like him. I almost didn’t recognize Caroline Aaron, but her voice gave away that she was the same actress who plays Shirley Maisel on “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” Trevor believing that he was a DILF was a humorous switch for him, though that didn’t last long once he learned that he wasn’t actually a father. Thor and Sasappis watching trash TV together and having a discussion about the joy of it being an activity they could share in was endearing, and I think this show really does offer intriguing commentary about the way we spend our time these days.
