Ghosts: Season 1, Episode 13 “The Vault” (B+)
I like seeing familiar faces on comedy series, but it’s especially fun when they play very much against type. I know Matt Walsh best from his role as the eternally hapless Mike on “Veep,” and this part enabled him to play one of the most despicable people ever to live or die in the house, and who knew exactly how to create mischief and misery for others when he discovered his power. His celebration of having made the white rhinoceros extinct was particularly villainous, and while I would have imagined that they could just lock him back in the vault forever, having him sent right down to hell was a pretty effective way of getting rid of him and scaring the others, particularly Trevor, into submission. I like how Hetty has transformed as a character and how she’s still old-fashioned but appreciates certain elements of modernity that afford women a modicum of respect. I didn’t think that they were going to lose the wedding so quickly and irreversibly, though it was hard to imagine how they could recover after trying to proposition the groom and it all getting worse by Sam suggesting that they were testing his fidelity. They also jumped to conclusions right away about the worth of the watch without getting it appraised, but I understand that them having to sell the house would ruin the show, so I’ll just take their word for it that it’s going to be valued high enough to keep them in business for the time being.
