What I’m Watching: Ghosts

Ghosts: Season 1, Episode 11 “Sam’s Mom” (B+)

It makes complete sense that, upon discovering the ability to see ghosts, a logical step would be to return to formative moments where people died unexpectedly or early to see if they’re still lingering there. There’s been too much to do so there hasn’t been time yet, but finding out that Sam’s mom died at a diner was an excellent opportunity for them to go there and try to find her. Fortunately, they did quickly, but she had plenty to say and unwanted opinions to offer Sam about what she had done with her career and with her life. Rachael Harris was a great choice to play her, and I enjoyed how she interacted with and commented on what Jay was doing, and how he had to pretend to be terrible when Sam was caught yelling at her mom with only him to blame. I liked when Sam realized that she was just trying to say the right thing so that she could finally ascend, and that they managed to actually bond just before it really happened. Hetty bossing her around and disapproving of things was a nice way for Sam to be lovingly reminded of her mom when they got back. Unfortunately, Sasappis did not do a good job of keeping the secret he overheard about Pete and Alberta, and Pete had to come up with a cover story about the very creepy Nancy. Maybe that unlikely romance will work out after all. And the hosts do need to figure out a way to keep the TV on for more than six hours when they go anywhere in the future.
