What I’m Watching: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: Season 4, Episode 4 “Interesting People on Christopher Street” (B+)

To begin by referencing this episode’s title, which led to a humorous appearance by John Waters, it is true that we don’t see much of Susie’s love life, but as she says, she’s focused on her work right now. Unfortunately, that means she’s going to have to deal with the newly-returned Sophie, who may have been forced to give up her driver and her business manager but still expects people like Susie to push elevator buttons for her. I imagine that Susie’s amazing apartment deal is going to come with some unexpected visitors, but that’s part of the charm. At least she’ll be out of Midge’s home, which will at least enable Zelda to go home so that she won’t have to stick around to wash a dish, a concept that provoked a hilariously response from Zelda about going to do comedy when Midge said she would just do it. Abe and Asher were all set to be off the hook with the FBI but then Abe’s jealously got the better of him, and now he’s the one who seems angry and unhappy while Asher is ready to use the drama to write his next book. I’m eager to see what Joel’s parents think of Mei when they meet her, and she’s probably right that they may not call her the nicest names. I did enjoy Joel’s reaction to Midge having apparently told Ethan she was working at a strip club. That gig does seem to be working out pretty well, and even though she’s doing plenty that might get her in trouble, she has managed to get her new boss to think twice about saying things to her he shouldn’t, which should keep him sufficiently in line and her job secure.
