What I’m Watching: The Righteous Gemstones (Season Finale)

The Righteous Gemstones: Season 2, Episode 9 “I Will Tell of All Your Deeds” (B+)

When I started this episode, I thought for a moment that I had missed something because Thaniel was back and it was continuing from a point that we saw a few installments back. But then I understood that we were getting the explanation to everything that’s been going on, which involve Lyle feeding intel to Thaniel and then being upset when he wasn’t interested in serving a particular purpose. That he got shot by his own gun wasn’t all that consequential, especially since Lyle made sure to set all the remaining witnesses on fire so that they couldn’t testify about anything. At the beachfront celebration, where it looked like Lindy might be the one to shoot Lyle at first, BJ got the brunt of the weaponized aggression, though it led to him being treated as family by both Jesse and Eli, which is just about all he’s ever wanted. Jesse using his slingshot was a pretty great moment, though that didn’t quite compare to the brutal end that Lyle got, when his own motorcycle henchmen chased him outside and then opted not to shoot him so that he would instead freeze to death. Jesse and Amber turning to couples therapy was a positive use of their talents, and things actually seem to be going pretty well for the Gemstones at the moment. Even Baby Billy and Tiffany got back together, with Baby Billy so thrilled to find out that Tiffany had delivered a toilet baby just like herself. This has been a fun season, and I’m glad that it’s coming back for another round.

Season grade: B+
Season MVP: Danny McBride as Jesse and Cassidy Freeman as Amber
